Emergency Front of Neck Access or (eFONA) is now an integral component of most airway algorithms for unanticipated difficult tracheal intubation. In recent years it has been recognized that whilst there have been many improvements in airway management techniques and the introduction of equipment like video laryngoscopes and supraglottic airways has helped to improve management of the airway in difficult situations, eFONA remains the last resort in a ‘Can’t Intubate, Can’t oxygenate’(CICO) scenario where all other methods to secure the airway have failed.
The Control-Cric™ is specially designed for eFONA, incorporating a 10mm dual sided blade, a bespoke tube (The Cric-Key™) and a neck strap. The Control-Cric™ is a Cricothyrotomy System which verifies tracheal location during a surgical airway procedure, without the need for visualization, air aspiration, or reliance of fine motor skills. The device was designed by Dr Richard Levitan, and Emergency Medicine physician in the USA. The complete system incorporates the following components:
• The Cric-Knife™: A 10mm long dual sided blade with an integrated sliding tracheal hook.
• The Cric-Key™: A pre-shaped introducer that provides airway confirmation with tactile feedback from the tracheal rings, along with a soft cric-tube with cuff.
• Stabilizing strap
• Inflation syringe
• Wedge
• Extension Tube
In addition to the sterile device designed for clinical use, the range also includes a training kit (non-sterile) for non-clinical training purposes and the Cricalot, an anatomically accurate, realistic, low cost training model for cricothyrotomy designed by the inventor of Control-Cric™ – Dr Richard Levitan.
